John Barrymore's Hamlet screentest: "Now might I do it pat"
An excerpt from the Barrymore's 1933 screentest for RKO's unproduced film of Hamlet. The full six minute screentest is not available, but here (for the first time in color online) is Barrymore's performance of the soliloquy from Act III, Scene 3. Sourced from the 1975 documentary "Approaches to Hamlet" (available on the Internet Archive).

An Interview with Ian Fleming
Просмотров 14 тыс.Год назад
The only surviving film or video of Ian Fleming is this 27 minute interview conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation half a year before Fleming's death. It aired on the CBC-TV program "Explorations" on Aug. 17, 1964. Apologies for the low visual quality.
"Cold Turkey" - Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (surviving footage!)
Просмотров 16 тыс.5 лет назад
Segments of the once-lost Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon "Cold Turkey" (1929) were discovered in Albany, Oregon in 2018 and have been donated to the UCLA Film & Television Archive. "Cold Turkey" dates from Oswald's post-Disney career at Universal Studios and was animated by Walter Lantz, Bill Nolan, and Tom Palmer. How the fragments came into the possession of the Greater Albany Public School ...
"Danny Deever" by Lawrence Tibbett
Просмотров 8855 лет назад
A recording from 1955 of the great opera baritone Lawrence Tibbett, performing a song based on the Rudyard Kipling poem "Danny Deever" (set to music by Walter Damrosch in 1897). Apologies for the audio imperfections this is the best copy I could find. The original poem is below: Danny Deever By Rudyard Kipling ‘What are the bugles blowin’ for?' said Files-on-Parade. ‘To turn you out, to turn yo...
"What a Day" -- Don Robertson

This dreamy, gentle ballad was released in 1963 as the B-side of "The Dictionary Song" (also in this channel).
"I'm Yours" -- Don Robertson
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.6 лет назад
Originally written by Don Robertson and Hal Blair for the wedding scene in the Elvis film "Blue Hawaii," but not used. Elvis later recorded the song for his 1962 album "Pot Luck." This version, recorded by Robertson in 1968 and released a year later, retains the Hawaiian slide guitar that was probably in the original demo (much superior to the roller-rink organ in Elvis's version!).
"Can't Stop a Man in Love" -- Wilson Pickett (Alt. Version!)
Просмотров 5247 лет назад
Recorded at Muscle Shoals on Feb. 2 1972, during Pickett's final session for Atlantic, this gem was not released until 2009. A different "official" version was released three years earlier but feels over-produced next to this hard-hitting track.
"Your Mother Is a Hippie" -- Sly and the Family Stone

Just in time for Mother's Day! A hidden jewel from Sly and the Family Stone's 1976 album "Heard Ya Missed Me, Well I'm Back." Even if your mother isn't a hippie she'll appreciate the message.
John Barrymore recites "To be or not to be"
Просмотров 7 тыс.8 лет назад
From John Barrymore's last film, "Playmates." The only moment of greatness in this otherwise terrible comedy is Barrymore's farewell to Shakespeare, perhaps the most moving version of Hamlet's soliloquy on film.
"I Can Feel the Fire" -- Rod Stewart & The Faces
Просмотров 52 тыс.10 лет назад
An incendiary live performance by the Faces, from 1975. "I Can Feel the Fire" was written by Ronnie Wood and Mick Jagger and first released on Wood's 1974 solo album "I've Got My Own Album to Do." Evidently it slipped into the Faces' last live shows, as this scorching performance demonstrates. Easily the best version of the song.

Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis were two very different people with alot in common, both were incredibly talented, both were incredibly charismatic, both were known for over the top energy and stage performance, both were controversial and authentic, both were amazing piano players, both had iconic style, and both were legends in their own time.

Barrymore, who by this time was a hopeless alcoholic, was reduced to playing a parody of himself as a former great who has seen better days. He character was even called "John Barrymore". He hams it up throughout the film. However, in this brief scene reciting Hamlet, he plays it straight and you can see what a superb actor he once was. I notice that at the end, he seems to get emotional for a second, maybe realizing the greatness which he had left behind.

I'm currently reading the four remaining 007 books I somehow missed decades ago, and what is most striking, is how smart and literate Fleming was. It comes across on virtually every page. As someone who has had articles published and worked as an editor and proofreader as well as story reader for a literary agency, he had a real style which might seem dated by today's standards, but I was struck by Fleming's considerable knowledge of world events. He must've been an incredibly voracious newspaper reader as his knowledge of international events is impressive. And this was decades before any Internet. His intelligence is always on display and in many ways, despite what the interviewer is implying here with his questions, the 007 stories come across as almost quaint by today's standards (2024),, so readers should take that into consideration today or they might be disappointed, especially when comparing the books to the movies as after Thunderball, there's virtually no similarities except the titles. People forget that he wrote most of these in the 1950s, and early 60s, and the descriptions of sex and violence is almost nil! I just finished reading "The Spy Who Loved Me" which was considered rather inappropriate by some when it was released and there's not a single 4 letter word in the entire story, and the single act of sex is glossed over and merely hinted at in a single sentence!

Royale les Eaux is actually based on Le Touquet. This is born out by the descriptions of the outside of the casino, opposite the hotel Hermitage, the drive through the corniche to try and get Vespa. And in 1932 it was the highest revenue casino in the world. The general location and name and possibly inside the casino are based on Deauville.
