The only surviving film or video of Ian Fleming is this 27 minute interview conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation half a year before Fleming's death. It aired on the CBC-TV program "Explorations" on Aug. 17, 1964. Apologies for the low visual quality.

Segments of the once-lost Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon "Cold Turkey" (1929) were discovered in Albany, Oregon in 2018 and have been donated to the UCLA Film & Television Archive. "Cold Turkey" dates from Oswald's post-Disney career at Universal Studios and was animated by Walter Lantz, Bill Nolan, and Tom Palmer. How the fragments came into the possession of the Greater Albany Public School ...

A recording from 1955 of the great opera baritone Lawrence Tibbett, performing a song based on the Rudyard Kipling poem "Danny Deever" (set to music by Walter Damrosch in 1897). Apologies for the audio imperfections this is the best copy I could find. The original poem is below: Danny Deever By Rudyard Kipling ‘What are the bugles blowin’ for?' said Files-on-Parade. ‘To turn you out, to turn yo...

Originally written by Don Robertson and Hal Blair for the wedding scene in the Elvis film "Blue Hawaii," but not used. Elvis later recorded the song for his 1962 album "Pot Luck." This version, recorded by Robertson in 1968 and released a year later, retains the Hawaiian slide guitar that was probably in the original demo (much superior to the roller-rink organ in Elvis's version!).

Recorded at Muscle Shoals on Feb. 2 1972, during Pickett's final session for Atlantic, this gem was not released until 2009. A different "official" version was released three years earlier but feels over-produced next to this hard-hitting track.

An incendiary live performance by the Faces, from 1975. "I Can Feel the Fire" was written by Ronnie Wood and Mick Jagger and first released on Wood's 1974 solo album "I've Got My Own Album to Do." Evidently it slipped into the Faces' last live shows, as this scorching performance demonstrates. Easily the best version of the song.

Perhaps the best song ever written about Elvis and his fans. Music by Pete Atkin, lyrics by Clive James. From Atkin's album "A King At Nightfall," which can be purchased from his webpage at: www.peteatkin.com/hillshop.htm Lyrics: When the King of Rock and Roll sang in the desert He didn't seem to age like other men. To Vegas came the ladies with pink rinses Agog to see the dreamboat sail again....

The best Casino Royale is the 1967 comedy starring Peter Sellers, David Niven, Ursela Andress, Orsen Wells, Joanna Pettet etc - more stars in this movie than any other I have ever watched including Woody Allen's first starring role. Oh, and soundtrack by Herb Alpert....

Royale les Eaux is actually based on Le Touquet. This is born out by the descriptions of the outside of the casino, opposite the hotel Hermitage, the drive through the corniche to try and get Vespa. And in 1932 it was the highest revenue casino in the world. The general location and name and possibly inside the casino are based on Deauville.

Fleming’s golf club was Huntercombe, which is just a mile or so from the House in Nettlebed. I think it’s the case that in Goldfinger, Goldfinger and Bond play their golf match at Sandwich in Kent but Bond say that he keeps his handicap at Huntercombe.

Fleming introduced many new innovative cultural firsts: 1. Fleming used to report in the situation while happening rather than about the situation: beginning of Gonzo Journalism which Hunter Thompson lifted. 2. Flemings careful attention to "brands" like Bentley, Ritz Carlton, Ronson lighters, Dior dresses, was the beginning of brand positioning in art. 3. Flemmings casual sexual escapades and misogyny surrounded by gadgets was inspiration for Hefner and Playboy magazine. He was at the forefront of a cultural sexual revolution.

While entertaining, the idea of a flashy, attention-grabbing "secret" agent makes no sense. In reality, JB would have been a liability to any agency he worked for. Real spies are invisible. They operate in the shadows and draw no attention. They often hide in plain sight. Tinker Tailor is the real set up. Procedural, plodding, full of crossed Ts and dotted i's. It is anonymous work. No medals, but maybe a small pension. Guiness really brought this out as George Smiley, in Lecarre's work. The quiet resignation tonthe idea that sgents were comprimised and killed because of a mistep, is truly disturbing.

Very good documentary. It mentions how bothered Brits were by the decline of British power and influence. I think this was manifested most strongly in You Only Live Twice, in which the Brits show resentment towards America for viewing Asia as under their sphere of influence, not Britain's. Tiger Tanaka doesn't hesitate to point out the decline of the British Empire to Bond. Bond replies defensively that it was a Brit who had conquered Everest, and Brits were still winning Olympic medals. Fleming didn't think much of the CIA, Felix Leiter notwithstanding.

60 years ago, British author Ian Fleming had spent his last visit to Oracabessa on the North shore of Jamaica as the "Commander" regularly overwintered at "Goldeneye" as clockwork, arriving in late December and back in England by late March. Fleming was determined to spent his spring/summer of 1964 between his house in Sevenhampton, London and the small cottage at St Margaret's Bay right beside the white cliffs near Dover. A perfect place to visit the nearby Royal St George Golf Club in Sandwich, hoping to become club Captain in 1965. It was not to be, the summer of 1964 was tragic as his mother died in July and Ian Fleming passed away in August...

Ian Fleming was actually issued a Colt 1908, .25 in WWII. He kept it after the war and it is listed in his estate. Serial number 257024 . See COLT FORUM for details. The gun is listed as a Browning .25 , however the serial number does not match a Browning. I does match a Colt made in 1920. However Flemings gun could have been a FN, made in Belgium with an identical serial number as the Colt .25 ...
